What is NDA?
The National Defence Academy (NDA) is a prestigious military training institution in India that prepares young individuals to become officers in the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. Established in 1954, the NDA is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. It is one of the premier tri-service academies in the world.
The primary objective of the NDA is to provide comprehensive training to candidates who aspire to serve in the armed forces as officers. The academy offers a structured and rigorous training program that includes academic education, physical fitness training, leadership development, and military skills training.
Criteria to join NDA
To join the National Defence Academy (NDA) in India, candidates must meet certain eligibility criteria and undergo a rigorous selection process. The NDA is a prestigious institution that trains candidates to become officers in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Here are the key criteria and requirements:
01Â Nationality
- The candidate must be a citizen of India.
- The candidate can also be a subject of Bhutan.
- The candidate can also be a subject of Nepal.
02Â Â Age Limits
- For the Army Wing of NDA: Candidates must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years of age.
- For the Navy and Air Force Wings of NDA: Candidates must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years of age.z
03Â Â Education
- For the Army Wing of NDA: Candidates must have completed their 10+2 (12th class) examination or its equivalent from a recognized board.
- For the Navy and Air Force Wings of NDA: Candidates must have completed their 10+2 (12th class) examination or its equivalent with Physics and Mathematics.
04Â Other Status
- Candidates must be unmarried. Marriage during the training period at NDA is not permitted.
- Candidates must be in good physical shape and meet the prescribed medical and physical standards.
- Both male and female can apply for the defence exams

Fields of Training at the NDA
The National Defence Academy (NDA) in India offers training in various fields, preparing cadets for careers as officers in the Indian Armed Forces. The NDA provides education and training in the following fields.
Indian Army
Cadets who choose the Indian Army as their preferred service undergo training in the Army Wing of NDA. They are prepared for roles and responsibilities including infantry, artillery, armored corps, and other specialized branches.
Indian Navy
Cadets interested in the Indian Navy receive training in the Navy Wing of NDA. The training includes education and practical experience in various aspects of naval operations, navigation, communication, and maritime warfare.
Indian Air Force
Those aspiring to join the Indian Air Force undergo training in the Air Force Wing of NDA. They receive instruction in aviation, aeronautics, aircraft operations, and air combat tactics.
NDA Exam Pattern
NDA Written Examination Pattern:
Subjects: The NDA written examination consists of two papers – Mathematics (Paper I) and General Ability Test (GAT) (Paper II).
Nature of Questions:
- Mathematics Paper: Objective-type questions related to mathematics.
- General Ability Test (GAT) Paper: Objective-type questions covering English, General Knowledge, and Science.
Language: The question papers are available in both English and Hindi languages.
Duration:
- Mathematics Paper: 2.5 hours
- General Ability Test (GAT) Paper: 2.5 hours
Marking Scheme:
- Each question in both papers carries a specified number of marks.
- There is a penalty for wrong answers. For each incorrect answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that question are deducted as a negative mark.
Syllabus:
- Mathematics Paper: This paper includes topics such as algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, and statistics.
- General Ability Test (GAT) Paper: This paper covers English (grammar and vocabulary), general knowledge (current events, history, geography, and more), and basic sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, and more).
Qualifying Marks:
- To qualify for the interview stage, candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in each paper as determined by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
Interview and Selection Process:
Candidates who clear the written examination are called for an interview conducted by the Service Selection Board (SSB). The SSB interview assesses a candidate’s suitability for a career as an officer in the Indian Armed Forces and includes psychological testing, group tasks, and personal interviews. The final selection is based on a candidate’s performance in both the written examination and the SSB interview.
